RCW’s work on nuclear weapons
A ban on nuclear weapons would constitute a practical and effective measure for nuclear disarmament, helping to establish the framework for the complete elimination of nuclear weapons. To this end, RCW, representing WILPF, is a partner organization of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) and has published a number of papers on a treaty banning nuclear weapons. We have also participated in all of the conferences on the humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons, conduct advocacy with governments on the ban, and work with other civil society groups to raise awareness and mobilise for action.
At the 2010 NPT Review Conference, states parties adopted a 64 point action plan in order to further the implementation of the treaty. RCW, in partnership with the government of Switzerland, has produced comprehensive reports on the implementation of this action plan from 2011 to 2015.
RCW also reports on various fora, meetings, and processes related to nuclear weapons, such as the NPT, the UN General Assembly First Committee, the UN Disarmament Commission, the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Conferences, the Open-Ended Working Group meetings and other ad hoc conferences and meetings, such as relevant UN Security Council meetings, the Conference of States Parties to Nuclear-Weapon Free Zones, and more.
