Towards a Lasting Peace in Libya

More than seven years after the 2011 Libyan Revolution, Libya still faces serious political and social challenges of the democratic transition. A key missing element is the participation of Libyan women, whose important role as bearer of peace is not recognised by neither the local nor the international community.

This has to change.

Partnership for meaningful participation

In 2018, WILPF in partnership with the Libyan organisation Together We Build It (TWBI) started the project ‘Towards a Lasting Peace in Libya – Supporting a feminist movement for peace.’ With this project, the partners aim to strengthen women’s meaningful participation in the Libyan decision-making and peace-building processes by building Libyan women’s rights activist’s advocacy capacity and bringing their recommendations to the national and international fora.

National consultations as a starting point

Following an inclusive feminist approach and in collaboration with WILPF, TWBI has in August 2018 conducted three national consultations in the cities of Tripoli, Sabha and Benghazi. The objective was to collect the most recent input and recommendations of Libyan women activists on the peace process, hereunder listen to how they believed their influence on the peace-building efforts could be strengthened. The main outcome of these consultations has already served as a basis to design advocacy tools to shape the debate and discourse around the Women, Peace and Security in Libya locally, nationally and internationally. A solid policy brief in the same direction is underway.

Statement to the UN Human Rights Council, session 39.

On 23 August 2018, WILPF supported by Together We Build It, submitted a written statement to the 39th session of the UN Human Rights Council. The statement draws attention to the United Nations and States’ disappointing efforts to meaningfully include Libyan women in the consultative process relating to the UN Action Plan for Libya and makes recommendations about how to ensure women’s meaningful inclusion in political and peace-building efforts.
