WILPF Participation in Annual Veterans for Peace Convention
Annual Veterans for Peace Convention
Wednesday, August 8, 2012
The Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF U.S.) will participate in the 27th Annual Convention of Veterans for Peace (VFP) which will take place Wednesday August 8 - Sunday August 12 in Miami, Florida.
Friday, August 10 at 1 p.m., the WILPF-DC Branch will be screening the documentary "URANIO 238—The Pentagon´s Dirty Pool," a 28-minute documentary produced by Pablo Ortega for the San José, Costa Rica, Quaker Peace Center, for the First Latin American Conference on Uranium Weapons, Costa Rica, March 2009. Read more about the DU Small Grant in Support of Upcoming 2012 UN Resolution on Depleted Uranium here.
This year's theme "Liberating the Americas: Lessons from Latin America and the Caribbean," will bring together Alice Walker, Father Roy Bourgeois, Leah Bolger, Phil Donahue, Col. Ann Wright, Camilo Mejia, Paula Kaplan, Medea Benjamin, Marleine Bastien, and many more speakers and participants in a series of workshops, films, mini-plenaries and informal discussions.
Efforts from Latin America supporting a ban on the use of depleted uranium toxic radioactive weapons, status of the International Campaign, as well as current efforts of WILPF U.S. Branches and other allies in support of the upcoming UN Resolution on depleted uranium munitions coming up this Fall will be discussed.
The U.S. Government, guilty of using radioactive weapons against civilians, soldiers and the environment, has consistently obstructed these efforts, voting against transparency, disclosure and amounts used with the objective of facilitating the assessment of these areas. Last UN Resolution on DU in 2010 was voted against by only four states: The United States, United Kingdom, France and Israel.
WILPF Branches in the United States are discussing and viewing the documentary, and expressing readiness to support to next step of lobbying and letter writing campaign which the DC Branch will help facilitate. Other Branches have scheduled upcoming showings. You are invited to accompany this effort.
Under consideration is support for HR-248 The Depleted Uranium Screening and Testing Act, as well as sending letters to Ambassador Susan Rice, U.S. Representative at the United Nations. It is time to hold the U.S. Government accountable.
If you have not received information and would like to receive a copy of the documentary and information on upcoming actions, contact WILPF-DC at firstname.lastname@example.org. Your support is vital to generate momentum on this issue.
