Cluster Bomb Ban: 8 More Senators Needed
Dear Odile Hugonot Haber,
We've just learned that advocates in Maine have hit a grand slam! They
have persuaded both of their senators and both of their
representatives to endorse legislation banning the use of cluster
bombs in areas normally occupied by civilians (S. 594/H.R. 1755). A
bipartisan group of 22 senators has now endorsed the Cluster Munitions
Civilian Protection Act (S. 594). The current administration and the
Pentagon both oppose this legislation.
A strong show of support for this legislation now is critical. It will
help determine how seriously the next Congress and the next
administration will work to ban these deadly, indiscriminate weapons.
FCNL lobbyists have identified Senator Levin as one of eight members
of the Senate most likely to cosponsor this bill this year. But we
need your help.
We at FCNL hope to persuade at least 30 senators to cosponsor this
legislation before the end of the year - that's another eight senators
before the 110th Congress adjourns. If we get 30 cosponsors before the
end of this year, Congress and the next administration will be much
more likely to act in 2009.
Take Action
Please urge Senator Levin to cosponsor the Cluster Munitions Civilian
Protection Act (S. 594). If you've already written your senator,
please ask five friends in your state to contact your senator.
