Subject: [Humanrights] sexual abuse and interpersonal violence in US Military
To: AHRC <humanrights at wilpf.org>, paulj at cruzio.com

Dear AHR members,
Please read the message forwarded below from the Miles Foundation,
which works with service women who have suffered abuse or worse at the
hands of the U.S. military. Thus far, WILPF has not really thought
about this growing population or the human rights crisis underlying
this emerging problem. However, I believe that we as an organization
ought to discuss if and how we might take it on. I have met many WILPF
members who came into WILPF as a result of the military involvement of
male family members (who were killed by friendly fire, who were
traumatized, etc.); I believe that the disillusioned women currently
being discharged from service are potential allies for us if we in
some way recognize and respond to their situation. Please think about
this and perhaps we can have some discussion?
Laura

forwarded message from Miles Foundation:

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I am writing following an extraordinary busy weekend for our office.
A large number of requests for additional assistance from victims and
survivors were received. I want to reach out to colleagues in the
field to enhance our references and referrals as well as to engage
colleagues with some clients-in other words, continue to create a
network of safety, services and justice for those victimized by
domestic and sexual violence.

The following are an examples of requests in which additional
assistance and support would be welcome:-

Attorney/Victim Advocate:-A victim advocate is encountering serious
ramifications following advocacy for victims of sexual and domestic
violence. An attorney with experience in employment law and advocacy
issues would be a welcome addition to the team currently assisting
this victim advocate.

Forensic Pathologist:-The death of a victim requires a review by
experts in the field of forensic pathology.

Support Groups/Therapist:-A survivor is requesting additional
information as to support groups for women who have survived sexual
abuse in the Southeastern United States. The survivor is seeking
groups which include veterans or active duty personnel. However, the
survivor wishes only to participate in groups with civilian
affiliations.

Legislation:-Members of Congress and staff are reviewing legislation
to address the response of the US Armed Forces to domestic and sexual
violence. Comments, revisions, recommendations, suggestions, etc.,
are being sought by colleagues in the field as to a draft of
legislation. To review the legislation, visit http://thomas.loc.gov

Search Engine Please forward any commentary to the Public Policy
Office, The Miles Foundation, at 203-270-7861 or Milesppd at aol.com

If you and/or your organization have any suggestions as to additional
information, referrals or references concerning the above victim
assistance requests, please contact me at 203-270-7861 or
