Pat is now in the Acute Physical Therapy ward for a
week where I was in 1999 and has the same therapist
who is also a peace activist. She is doing well and
educating how peace, women' rights and human rights are
connected to the hospital structure. in Peace Yvonne.
> This week, the Israeli Defence Forces began
> procedures to seize 113ha of
> land belonging to four West Bank villages to the
> east of Jerusalem,
> ostensibly to build more of the Wall and a
> Palestinian only road between
> Bethlehem to Jericho. The seizure, however, clears
> the path for a huge
> expansion of Israels illegal West Bank settlements,
> and accords with
> longstanding plans to build 3500 new homes and open
> a massive new security
> installation there.
>
> These plans, already subject to widespread
> international disapproval
> including that of the US, if executed will
> effectively sever the territorial
> contiguity of the West Bank, creating a corridor of
> Israeli settlements
> stretching from Jerusalem well into the Jordan
> Valley.
>
> The IDF this week also announced variations to the
> planned route of the Wall
> near the Dead Sea, that would increase the
> percentage of total Palestinian
> lands falling on the Israeli side of the Wall from 9
> to 12 percent.
>
> Both land grabs have been interpreted as attempts to
> maximize Israels
> footprint in the West Bank, prior to any commitment
> it might give at the US
> Peace Conference in November ruling out further land
> grabs.
>
> With the conference now little more than a month
> away, and the atmosphere
> soured by the seizure activities detailed above, the
> negotiating teams
> appointed by Israeli PM Olmert and PA President
> Abbas met for the first time
> this week. The teams are to draw up a joint
> declaration for their leaders to
> present at the US Peace Conference, and to establish
> the principles for the
> final status negotiations the two leaders hope
> will follow from it, but
> had little to say after their first meeting except
> that they had exchanged
> ideas.

> The digest is attached as a PDF. Please forward it
> on to anyone you think
> might benefit from having it.
>
> As always, I look forward to your comments and
> suggestions.
