Dear Joel, Odile, and Jonathan,
I'm forwarding this message from Leslie Cagan (UFPJ National
Coordinator) about this new Billboard Project. Sounds like a great
idea to me. What do you think of raising the $1,350
or so for a billboard for one of the expressways? And would you like
to participate in the conference call on December 11th?
Susan
Jonathan--I'm not sure that your group is a UFPJ member but I'm
including you since AWA! was.

Dear UFPJ Member Groups:
Today UFPJ is launching a Billboard Project. Our aim is to place as
many billboards with a peace message on U.S. roads as we can. The
Billboard Project is both a national campaign and a grassroots effort.
We'll handle most of the logistics, but it's up to your group to raise
the funds for your own billboard . . . and it's more affordable than
you might think! If this sounds interesting, please read on. (There is
information near the end of this memo about a conference call your
group is invited to participate in about tis project.)
Below is a fullsize antiwar billboard recently obtained by a UFPJ
member group as a pilot for the Billboard Project. It's already being
seen by tens of thousands of drivers every day on a busy interstate
highway. This billboard was purchased at a reduced rate as a public
service announcement, or PSA. UFPJ is offering to help your group
obtain a similar PSA antiwar billboard in your community.
Billboards are great organizing tools. They get media coverage, show
the community that the antiwar sentiment is strong, attract new
members and contributions, and build morale.
Here's how it works. In order to obtain a PSA rate from a billboard
company, the contracting party has to be a documented not-for-profit
organization. PeaceRoots.org, a member of UFPJ, is a not-for-profit
with years of experience partnering with local groups to post over 200
progressive billboards and other signage across the country. They can
partner with your group. If you happen to have not-for-profit status,
they can still partner with you. They know how to negotiate with
billboard companies, and -- importantly -- they can arrange design and
production of the sign at a reduced rate.
Rates and availability of PSAs vary widely from place to place. In the
case of the billboard pictured above, PeaceRoots.org partnered with
the Northwest Indiana Coalition Against the Iraq War (that's their web
address at the top of the billboard). The total cost amounted to about
$1,350 -- roughly $600 for production, $600 to the billboard company
to install the billboard, and a 10% charge by PeaceRoots.org for their
time and expenses. For that investment of $1,350, the billboard will
remain up for one year -- though it may be moved to a different
location, if a commercial customer wants that space. For comparison,
the commercial rate for the space is $3,000 per month. There may also
be opportunities for still less expensive PSA signage in your
community, such as the sides of buses, transit kiosks, or smaller
billboards.
You could use the design shown above (but with your web address),
select a "Support the Troops, Bring Them Home Now" design, or come up
with a design of your own. But keep in mind that PSA messages have to
be non-political and not too controversial -- for example, "Impeach"
or "Killer" messages wouldn't be accepted.
We hope you'll talk this project over in your group. If you're
interested and want to learn more, please take part in a conference
call on Tuesday, December 11th at 8:30pm (east coast time). Or you can
contact the Billboard Project Coordinator directly. That's Tony
Shafton at ashafton at aol.com or (219) 939-2050. If you want to be on
this call, please send a quick note to us at
thismessage:/organizing at unitedforpeace.org and we will send you the
details.
One last thing: arranging for a billboard is quite time-consuming, so
projects will have to be undertaken on a first-come first-served
basis.
peace,
Leslie Cagan
National Coordinator, UFPJ
