              America Says NO !

Please participate in and help organize an emergency response to the
President's Wednesday night (9pm EST) speech in which he will announce
escalation of the war by putting 20-30,000 more troops on the ground in
Iraq.

Win Without War and True Majority have pulled together a coalition of
organizations to organize emergency protests the following day.  They have
setup a website at www.AmericaSaysNo.org at which people can both locate and
register events in their community.  All events will take place on Thursday
evening (or 24 hours after the president's speech, if for some reason it is
rescheduled).  U.S. Labor Against the War encourages your participation.

Here is what you need to do -

1.       Choose a high-visibility site (busy intersection, transit station,
etc.).  Go to the website to register the location if it has not already
been registered by someone else.  If you prefer to organize an event in your
own neighborhood, register it on the website.  People looking for events can
punch in their zipcode and will be provided a list of events near them.  So,
do register the event if it has not already been registered.

2.      At the site, access the "event kit," which includes a PDF of the NO!
More Troops signs that can be downloaded and printed out.  [Or design your
own.]  Bring copies with you to the vigil.  There you will also find a PDF
of an event flyer to give out in advance and "how to" instructions for both
individuals and organizations with instructions on how to set up an event.

3.      The website also has a link to a list of names of those U.S. troops
killed from each state that can be read during the protest.  Print out the
list for your state and bring it to the event.

4.      There is a downloadable copy of the Mandate for Peace Petition
available to circulate at the events, but we'd prefer that you to use the
USLAW petition, which can be downloaded from www.uslaboragainstwar.org. In
either case, turn in these petitions prior to the January 27th
demonstrations so that they can be delivered to members of Congress.  Remind
people they can also sign electronically the USLAW petition at the USLAW
website.

5.      If you have one, bring a digital camera (or ask others to do so).
Take group photos of all the people at the vigil holding their signs.
Upload the photos to the www.AmericaSaysNo.org website right after the
event.  They will be displayed there so that the media can see these
protests occurring all across the country.  If you have difficulty doing
this, send the photo to me and I will upload it.

6.      Circulate notice of these actions to all your lists and contacts,
asking them to do the same.  We know the power of the "viral effect" that
can be created on the Internet.  We have just a couple of days to tell
people about this action to encourage their turnout.

Silence in the face of this escalation is consent.  Consent is complicity.

Let's counter the Bush administration's "urge to surge" with the people's
"urge to purge" all troops from Iraq (and the criminals from the White
House).

Demonstrate your outrage and urge others to do likewise.

"Break the Chains" of Guantanamo!

The vigil will include a dramatic tableau of people chained together

in orange jumpsuits and black hoods, and a reading of names of

those imprisoned without trial at Guantanamo.

Following the vigil/tableau, the names of the Guantanamo prisoners

will be delivered to the Phila. office within the Federal Building of

Senator Arlen Specter, ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary

Committee, calling for the closure of Guantanamo and the repeal of

the Military Commissions Act.

other governments. Part of a national protest on Jan. 11,

commemorating the 5th anniversary of first prisoners arriving at

Guantanamo Naval Base.

where she has been working with detainee clients speak about the

denial of habeas corpus, the Military Commissions Act (MCA) of

2006, the use of torture, and the dangers all pose for U.S.

Constitutional law and basic human rights.

January 11th, 2007 marks five years of unjust imprisonment,

isolation, beatings, interrogation and abuse for these men. We must

say: no more. We must say: no longer. For our nation of laws, for

our democracy, for our humanity and theirs, we demand small but

essential steps to help return our nation to the best of our own

traditions.

We call on the United States government to:

· Repeal the Military Commissions Act and restore Habeas Corpus.

· Charge and try in Federal Court or release all detainees.

· Withhold funds for the proposed $125 million construction of new

military courts at Guantánamo.

· Clearly and unequivocally forbid torture and all other forms of cruel,

inhuman, and degrading treatment, by the military, the CIA, prison

guards, civilian contractors, or anyone else.

· Pay reparations to current and former detainees and their families

for violations of their human rights.

· Shut down Guantánamo, Abu Ghraib, Bagram and all other U.S.

prisons overseas, including secret CIA detention facilities.

We mark January 11, 2007 as a day of national shame. But we can

also mark it as a day of citizen action. How? By acting on behalf of

our fellow human beings in Guantánamo, their bereaved families

and all victims of the "war on terrorism."

We declare January 11, 2007 an International Day of Action to Shut

Down Guantánamo. In Washington, DC and around the country,

groups are planning vigils and actions at courthouses, federal

building and public squares. In other countries, the focus will be on

U.S. Embassies and military facilities.
