Brit Tzedek Welcomes Agreement on Palestinian Unity Government
Yesterday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas political bureau chief Khaled Meshal signed a deal to form the Palestinian Authority unity government. The agreement between rival factions Fatah and Hamas was reached after two days of intensive negotiations in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, and sets out the principles of the unity government, which is to be formed over the upcoming weeks.
Brit Tzedek is encouraged by the agreement and hopes that it will mark an end to the recent months of civil strife between Fatah and Hamas in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, leaving over 90 dead, and will result in greater stability and security for Palestinian society as a whole.
The agreement came in the form of a letter from President Abbas to Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas, asking him to form the new government. In the letter, Abbas asked the new government to "respect" previous peace agreements with Israel. While the exact parameters of the unity government's future relationship to Israel remain unclear, we are hopeful that the formation of this unity government will advance the return to the negotiating table based on a two-state resolution of the conflict.
