Hi WILPFers!
Just wanted to let you know about the great meeting we had today in Los
Angeles. Our sister member, Catia Confortini, spoke about the history of
International WILPF's involvement in Israel / Palestine. She is writing her
PhD thesis on the topic at the School of International Relations at the
University of Southern California. (Her paper is titled "The Gendered
Construction of 'Peace:' Conflict in Israel/Palestine and the Women's
International League for Peace and Freedom.")
Her talk was really interesting - we've been held back by our own
Eurocentrism since at least the 1940s. Of course, our foremothers didn't
know that term or understand their own biases, and they did much more for
the causes of peace and justice than other people. But nevertheless, I find
it useful to learn both the good and the bad parts of our history, so we can
try to not continue the same mistakes. Of course, one of the good parts that
we're trying to add to were the series of fact finding trips to the region
led by Libby Frank and Edith Ballantyne in the 1970s.
More exciting news from LA - we had a branch meeting after the lecture and
Catia agreed to be the LA branch rep to the WCUSP campaign. Welcome, Catia!
(Kate, can you add her to this listserv?)
in peace,
C.J.
