How much worse, before any better...

The Other Israel's email updates

--Introduction
--TOI's selection of this week's Occupation Magazine's daily picks
--Today's pics http://www.kibush.co.il/ (constantly renewed)

The Israeli political leadership fights for its survival - after the people (and the media) discovered that they had been misled in an unnecessary war whose goals could have been achieved as well, or better, by diplomacy. This is no longer the opinion only of the radical left, but can be heard now of none other than former Chief-of-Staff Moshe Ya'alon, and his rival former chief of staff and Defence Minister Shaul Mofaz.

Maybe (or are we again too optimistic?) this leaves Olmert-Peretz no other way out than moving towards exchange of prisoners and real peace talks.

Here follows TOI's selection of this week's Occupation Magazine's daily picks

                 [life under/struggle against occupation]

2 meals a day & forced labor for Palestinian minors in Israeli prison

Bethlehem & Bil`in - ongoing nonviolent struggle against concrete
1) IMEMC/Palestinenet.org: Bethlehem is surrounded by encroaching settlements and the Wall. Just recently 14 percent of the District was confiscated, with the northern city taken for military installations, a synagogue and a yeshiva, and put into the Israeli-controlled Jerusalem Municipality 2) ISM Media office - Bil`in - In contrast to previous anti-Wall demonstrations when soldiers brutally dispersed any groups of protesters, this time the soldiers allowed them to sit on the road.

The Forgotten People: The Despair of Gaza One Year After the 'Disengagement'.
Amin /Arab Internet Media Network - "Rarely, if ever before has Gaza seen such massive levels of violence, terror and death, such crippling rates of poverty and unemployment, such economic stagnation, and such a stranglehold over all of its border crossings."

Al-Tuwani: Truck bringing donated water disabled by - guess who
Dozens of metal spikes had been strewn across the road and caused damage to five tires of the water truck. At-Tuwani residents, who had talked with the driver of the truck, showed members of the peace team three of the spikes, which consist of four prongs of about 3/8 inch diameter and two inches long each, designed so one prong will jut into the air when tossed on a surface.

Mairead Corrigan Maguire - open email letter - "Both inside Israel and many in the International community, wait and watch, to see if [newly-appointed] President Beinisch and her 2 Justice colleagues, will have the courage to uphold International Laws and basic common decency and justice, and restore Mordechai Vanunu?s right to his basic freedom of speech and movement. [Editor`s note: Includes a description of a Supreme Court session by somebody not yet used to the Israeli routine of closed door evidence. bz)

Palestinians get organized as Israel tightens visa controls
Sharmila Devi - Financial Times - "Palestinian businessmen who returned from exile over the last decade to help build the economy in the occupied territories have launched a campaign against a change in Israeli immigration policy that they say is forcing them out"
http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=16279

Gaza shelves bare
IRIN - "This is the tenth store I approach to buy a single box of powdered milk for my little baby. I do not know what to do. I am ready to pay double price for having only one package, but there is none", said 32-year-old Tareq Omar after he failed to find any powdered milk for his one-year-old baby in Gaza`s Al-Zawiya market.`

Following B`Tselem`s intervention, Military Police to investigate eight cases of soldiers abusing Palestinians
B`Tselem-Press Release-"According to the testimonies, the soldiers beat, swore at, and degraded the Palestinians and damaged their property. Some of the victims subsequently required hospitalization. "

Report: 90% of Palestinian complaints to police `unsolved`
Avi Issacharoff - Haaretz - "A total of 90 percent of the complaints filed by Palestinians in the West Bank against Israeli citizens for violent attacks have been closed without charges being filed, according to a report prepared by the human rights organization Yesh Din, which will be made public today.

                 [analysis & comment]

Making Israel take responsibility
James Bowen - Haaretz - Many members of the [Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign] are veterans of other anti-racist campaigns, such as those concerned with South Africa, East Timor and rights for Native Americans. IPSC members also support campaigns for West Papuans, Kurds, Tibetans and others. The Belfast branch is affiliated to a network which opposes attacks on immigrant workers in that city. With this wide perspective, we see that hafrada (separation) is the Zionist form of apartheid, so we argue that Israel should be treated like the old South Africa.

What Aharon Barak leaves behind (Tom Segev tackles legend)
Tom Segev - Haaretz - "Barak began his tenure as Israel`s Supreme Court president when it seemed that many countries were entering an era of relative freedom, with the collapse of the Communist empire and the apartheid regime in South Africa. The situation in Gaza and the West Bank, by contrast, persistently worsened; the Palestinians` human rights were increasingly eroded. Again and again they appealed to Aharon Barak`s Supreme Court and usually did not receive the succor they sought. When Effi Eitam`s trucks show up to expel them, it`s unclear whether the Supreme Court will protect them.

Bashar and Bishara get it
Ofer Shinar - Ynet News - "A different reading of reality shows that Syria is reacting logically to the Israeli desire to become enclosed behind high walls and prevent any dialogue between the peoples. In a recent Tel Aviv lecture by New York psychoanalyst Neil Altman, he noted that acts of suicide and terror by young Palestinians may also be interpreted as an attempt to make contact with the Israeli public.

Shooting without a target
Haaretz Editorial-"The cluster bomb is not a banned weapon, but it is described as an "indiscriminate" weapon, which should not be used against targets in civilian areas because, inter alia, it continues to kill once the war is over."
http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=16324

Occupation: The Missing Word
Rachelle Marshall - Washington Report on Middle East Affairs -"THE DATELINES may read Gaza, or Kandahar, or Samarra, but the events reported are the same: bombings, firefights, missile strikes, and civilian deaths. The violence in all three places comes in the aftermath of foreign invasion and occupation. Thousands of American soldiers are fighting in Afghanistan, along with hundreds of troops from Canada and Europe. Some 130,000 Americans are at war in Iraq. Heavily armed Israeli soldiers surround Palestinians in the West Bank, and Gazans hear the constant drone of Israeli aircraft. Yet the word "occupation" has disappeared from the news, supplanted by the "war on terrorism."

When rockets and phosphorous cluster
Meron Rapoport - Haaretz - "The commander asserted that there was massive use of MLRS rockets despite the fact that they are known to be very inaccurate - the rockets` deviation from the target reaches to around 1,200 meters - and that a substantial percentage do not explode and become mines. Due to these facts, most experts view cluster ammunitions as a "non-discerning" weapon that is prohibited for use in a civilian environment."
http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=16300

`The Syrians aren`t eager to arm Hezbollah`
Akiva Eldar - Haaretz - "If we don`t all make an effort, we are marching directly to catastrophe. Therefore I often break the rules of political correctness and express myself in strong language. The risk that I`m taking on myself is nothing compared to the dangers lying in wait for you." [Spanish FM Moratinos in interview]

Daughter of German Jewish leader speaks out
Evelyn Hecht-Galinski - Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung - "The stereotypical cycle - Israel destroys and the Europeans reconstruct, until Israel again wreaks havoc, driving the masses into poverty and leading to the economic decline of the Occupied Territories - must be broken.
