Aliyah Strauss - biography
Aliyah Strauss was born in St. Louis, MO, in 1935 and grew up in
Cleveland, OH. Aliyah left her studies at the New School for Social
Research in New York City to emigrate to Israel in 1957, where she has
lived ever since.
In 1985 she became active in Bridge for Peace and Co-Existence, a group
of Israeli Jews and Arabs who met regularly to discuss issues of common
interest. Since 1990 she has been active in Women in Black, and has
been part of their vigils for 16 years. In summer 2005 she was active
in organizing the international conference of Women in Black in
Jerusalem, attended by 500 women from all over the world.
Since 1988 she has been active in the Israel section of the Women's
International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF). She was elected
chair of the Israel section in 1997 and has attended a number of
international meetings and congresses of WILPF. In 1995 she, and an
Israeli Palestinian women, were the Israeli delegates to the NGO World
Conference on Women in China. They rode aboard the WILPF Peace Train
from Helsinki to the conference in Beijing, discussing peace and
justice issues with Eastern Europe/Central Asian women.
She's active in a number of other women's and peace organizations, such
as Bat Shalom, the Israeli part of the Jerusalem Link, with an office
in western Jerusalem.Together with the Palestinian part of the Link,
the Jerusalem Center for Women in eastern Jerusalem, they hold many
dialogue activities. She's also active in the Coalition of Women for
Peace, which includes all of the organizations mentioned and a few
more. The Coalition, as an umbrella organization, can plan and carry
out large scale actions like demonstrations.
In January, 2004, Aliyah became an active participant in Machsom
Watch. This group organizes small groups of women (2-5) who go into the
occupied Palestinian territories to monitor the checkpoints (machsom)
set up by the Israeli army all over the West Bank. Every day, in the
early morning when the Palestinian workers are going to work, and again
in the afternoon, the women of Machsom Watch visit the various
checkpoints and write reports that are posted on the Machsom Watch
website. These women are greatly appreciated by the Palestinians who
see them as a helping link to the Israeli occupation authority. All
these organizations are part of the Coalition of Women for Peace in
Israel (http://coalitionofwomen.org/home/english), a group of women's
organizations that oppose the occupation and the militarization of
Israeli society.
Aliyah has also organized and participates in the Raging Grannies in
Israel. The songs they have written and performed are very popular
among peace activists.
