Lantos Holds Up Lebanon Aid
    Rep. Tom Lantos, D-Calif., announced during a weekend trip to Israel
that he would use his influence as ranking Democrat on the House
International Relations Committee to delay President Bush's $230 million aid
package for Lebanon until the country allows U.N. troops to guard its border
with Syria against arms shipments to Hezbollah, according to news reports.
    Lantos' office was not able to confirm the reports and the office of
Rep. Henry J. Hyde of Illinois, the Republican chairman of the committee,
has not commented.
    Reuters reported that Lantos met with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and
Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni in Jerusalem on Sunday and said he was placing
the hold, adding, "It is very much my hope that I will be able to lift the
hold when the reasons will no longer be present." The Associated Press
quoted him as saying he told Olmert that the U.S. aid package to Lebanon was
important, "but that this package should be withheld until the Lebanese
government displays responsibility."
