WILPF to the US Government:
“What are you waiting for?”
Call Congress and the White House every day
Congress toll-free: 888-355-3588 and White House: 202-456-1111
EMERGENCY WEEK of LOCAL ACTIONS, August 7-11
WILPF is joining forces with organizations around the country,
including the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation and United for
Peace and Justice, in calling for another week of sustained pressure on
Congress to demand support for cease-fire resolutions and an end to
weapons deliveries to Israel. The European Union and Hezbollah, along
with most countries of the world, are calling for a cease-fire.
We have called upon our members and the public to demonstrate, call
Congress and write letters demanding an immediate ceasefire. We have
yet to be heard. Over 900 civilians have been killed in Lebanon, and
1/3 of them are children. One quarter of the population has been
displaced. The siege and violence in Gaza continues, and the sustained
oppression of Palestinian people in the occupied territories and in
Israel has intensified. This is no way for Israel to attain security.
WILPF’s political position on the Middle East remains consistent in the
face of this recent escalation of violence: Israel is the most heavily
armed country in the Middle East, and the only one with nuclear
weapons. It serves as a surrogate for the US both in the region and in
global affairs. Therefore, challenging US policy in the Middle East is
intricately linked to challenging Israeli foreign policy.
WILPF Calls on our members to:
• Call Congress daily to back the Kucinich and Jackson-Lee cease-fire
resolutions (H. Con Res. 450 and H. Res. 945).
• Organize an emergency local action this week to pressure Congress.
Depending on the position of your Members of Congress, local organizers
should decide whether a protest, vigil, meeting, or nonviolent civil
disobedience is the most effective tactic.
• Connect with National WILPF! Let us know what you’re doing to stop
this violence. Email Kate Zaidan, Program Coordinator at
kzaidan at wilpf.org with details of your actions. A compilation of
actions will be posted on the website and WILPF blog. Stay tuned for
details of a conference call to further connect your work!
