Thanks C.J. I noted Amy's question on Doublas Rokke and others charge re
use of depleted Uranium in the 28 U.S. conventional bunker buster bombs
supplied by the United States to Israel for use in Lebanon.

One of the Minneapolis WILPFers asked us about this. (Do they have a Middle
East Study group?). Pat Birnie has been doing some very careful research on
this claim which we can send to any involved in your campaign who are
interested in this issue. I admire Pat's objectivity in the search for the
truth -- something we should all seek to emulate. I also plan to put this
info up on our DISARM UPDATE website once I'm past the rush of posting
Hiroshima-Nagasaki week Branch reports and info..

I understand only Britain and the U.S. have used these bombs previously.
Neither war department will reveal the composition. Pat has found reliable
sources that deny evidence for the use of DU (probably in the casing), but
others are convinced. (I did find an article by Federation of Scientists in
which it is revealed that the Pentagon did admit use of DU in the shell for
similated nuclear bunker buster tests in 1998, but claimed it was safely
used in the hardened outer shell and would not disperse in the environment.)

Human RIghts Watch report does not deal with this issue, but does accuse
Israel of other war crimes including the use of phosphorus weapons in areas
with many civilians.

in peace, Carol
