Enews August 2007

Welcome to the August E-Newsletter.

As you can see, the dog days of August does not mean we are slowing our pace working for peace and justice. In this month of heat and draught, we ask you to take some time to plan for Blue October and to take action to Save the Water. We are making great strides with this campaign. San Francisco and Salt Lake City have banned bottled water purchases by their cities and municipalities across the country are promoting the use of their tap water.Great work!

We also are working with our sister organizations across the country to join together this fall to demand an end to War, all War. October 27th has been designated as a day of action across the country and WILPF is working with UFPJ to organize events in regional actions. Please find out what is happening in your community and get involved. Finally, we have put a bit of music in this E-news. We are linking to Pink's video, "Dear Mr. President." Radio stations in the United States will not play this song, but last week, it was the number one song around the world. The song is powerful and we want to share it and thank Pink for putting it out there... enjoy.

blue octoberCelebrate Blue October!

Blue October is an international month of action to challenge corporate control of water and to protect water as a shared natural resource available to all. On October 31, 2004, the people of Uruguay voted to amend their constitution to recognize the fundamental right to water. Their Constitution now guarantees that piped water and sanitation be available to all Uruguayans, and it bans for-profit corporations from supplying this public good. Blue October celebrates this historic move by challenging corporate control of water through global action!

Take Action Now! Stop Mining on Sacred Tribal Land! painted desert

WILPF's Save the Water Campaign recognizes the fundamental right for all people to have access to clean, safe water. On July 24, 2007 Senators Jon Kyl (R-AZ) and John McCain (R-AZ) introduced bill S. 1862, the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act of 2007, in the US Senate. A related bill, H.R. 3301, was introduced in the House of Representativesn  The proposed bills would grant land that is culturally, historically and environmentally invaluable to the Apache Nation to Resolution Copper Mining, a subsidiary of a multi-national mining corporation. Mining has contaminated more than 40 percent of the stream reaches of the headwaters of watersheds in the western U.S. (EPA, 2000), and the mine will exploit the already scare water resources in Arizona.

Right now the San Carlos Apache Tribe is leading the opposition against the bills, and they are asking for urgent and immediate support. Support the San Carlos Apaches and other tribes and the people of Superior by writing or calling your Congressional representatives, and letting them know that their constituents oppose these bills.

End Abusive and Improper Military Recruitment

counter recruitersIn 2004 – according to the latest available statistics from the Under Secretary of Defense – about 19,885 seventeen year old children joined the US armed forces, constituting 23% of all new reserves and 4.3% of active armed forces recruits.  These 14,933 boys and 4,952 girls represent a fraction of the youths targeted annually by military recruiters who have become an ominous presence in elementary schools across the country where students as young as 11 can participate in the Middle School Cadet Corps.

If you or your branch have been active in efforts to stop abusive and improper military recruitment in your communities and local schools, WILPF’s Advancing Human Rights Committee would like to introduce you to a new and potentially powerful advocacy strategy.

Dear Mr President

Pink's song "Dear Mr President", an open letter to George Bush has topped the charts around the world, but the song is mysteriously being held back in the US. Could it be that the big rock promoters are worried about rocking an already unstable boat too much for their own good? Check out the video here!
