Take Action Now for Human Rights and Safe Water

Your call CAN make a difference!

Hello California WILPFers and Earth Democracy supporters,

Last week, thanks to your phone calls to Senators Kehoe (Chair, Senate Appropriations Committee) and Steinberg (Senate Leader Pro-Tem), the Human Right to Water Bill (AB 685) made it one step closer to law when Senate Appropriations voted to pass it along to the Senate floor for a vote.

Your calls made a difference. AB 685 was one of only 5 out of over 200 bills held over from last year now allowed to move on to the Senate floor for a full vote.

Once again at this critical stage, the Safe Water Alliance, of which WILPF is a member, needs your calls. We aim to have the vote on next Tuesday, August  28th, so we want to begin to build the drumbeat and momentum now. The final vote has to be before August 31st.

Please call your State Senator’s office in Sacramento. Find your Senator’s name and Sacramento office number in the front pages of your telephone book or consult this website.

After reaching the office receptionist, identify yourself by name and where you live. State that you are calling to ask that Senator [Name] vote “Yes” on AB 685, the Human Right to Water Act. You might state that this has been a four year effort and you wish to have your Senator represent you by voting “Yes” to be sure that finally all Californians have access to safe, affordable water for drinking, cooking and sanitation.

We need 21 “yes” votes out of the 40 Senators and today we count approximately 17 “yes” votes among those Senators who voted “yes” on AB 1242, the prior Human Right to Water Act that Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed in 2009, and in Senate committees that voted for AB 685 in this 2012 session.

In 2009, AB 1242 did get some bi-partisan support, and so I urge you to call your Senator so we have the broadest support possible on such an important and historic bill.

Last year, Governor Brown declared, “Clean drinking water is a basic human right…. Protecting the water we drink is an absolutely crucial duty of state government.” It is thrilling to contemplate that finally this bill will get to Governor Brown’s desk and he’ll sign into law the first Human Right to Water Act passed by any state.

Your calls now will make the difference and lead to victory for human rights and safe water for all in this state. It is planned to pack the Senate gallery on Tuesday, August 28th, the expected day of voting and I will send another alert before then on directions for meeting up at the Capitol for this historic vote and victory rally.
