More than 200 years ago, the American revolutionary Thomas Paine epitomized the spirit of WILPF when he said: “The world is my country, all [hu]mankind are my brethren, and to do good is my religion.” With the inauguration of Barack Obama, the world truly is our country and there is much good work for all of us to do.
People from around the country went to Hyde Park, IL for Camp Hope (http://www.camphope2009.org/), a historic gathering of activists pushing for positive transformation.

Check out the cool video made by WILPF member Deetje Boler from the San Francisco Branch. The video shows WILPF women on the streets of San Francisco in early October 2008 demonstrating against the militarization of space and handing out flyers to passerbys. Several women also take the time to explain the whole PAROS (Prevent an Armed Race in Outer Space) movement and the need for the United States to sign the PAROS treaty. Bloomington Branch Update
Since we are a university town we have worked to get some Indiana University students active in WILPF. We have a small student membership and we have tried to support them in whatever efforts they are involved in, even when they are working with other organizations. Recently one of our students, also working with Amnesty, brought an Iraq Vet to campus to talk about his change of position on the war. We helped to provide funds to sponsor him.

WILPF envisions a transformed world at peace, where there is racial, social, and economic justice for all people everywhere - a world in which:

• All people equally participate in making the decisions that affect them,
• The interconnected web of life is acknowledged and celebrated in diverse ways and communities, and
• Human societies are designed and organized for sustainable existence.

The Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF-US) recognizes that the United States is a nation of immigrants from around the world whose many contributions have enriched our lives and communities from the nation's beginning.
WILPF and the UN
The Women's International League for Peace and Freedom has had consultative status (category B) with the UN through the Economic and Social Council since 1948.

The United States Section of WILPF works in coalition with other disarmament, women's human rights, and racial and economic justice organizations to translate women's experience and vision into policies to promote peace and justice.
WILPF US legislative actions are instigated by issue committees and individuals. As a member of WILPF, if there is a piece of legislation you would like us to organize around, please email wilpf@wilpf.org.
We believe the emphasis of the federal budget should be on human needs and human security. We strongly believe the military budget needs to be slashed and the savings used to develop peaceful economic stimulus. While we are encouraged by the direction of President Obama's 2010 budget request, we remain vigilant.
