Enews July 2007

Welcome to the July 2007 E-News!

WILPF members are on the move. This summer is proving to be a busy time for peace and justice activism. WILPF members and staff returned from the historic first US Social Forum in Atlanta, Georgia, with a great sense of hope. Those of us who were there witnessed a social revolution being born. Never before has such a large (over 10,000) group of diverse people come together, spent 4 days together, and focused on what unites us, our common vision for peace, health, justice, and sustainable communities. This truly was "we the people" and most exciting is the agreement that this is a beginning of a progressive left working together to achieve our goals. We hope you will visit our website where we have audio clips, reports, and photos to give you a sense of it all.

Next week, WILPF members from around the world will gather in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, to strategize together, share each others work and plan for our future. Upon return, WILPF staff and members will share their experiences and we will post them on our website.

On a sad note, we in WILPF are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Corbin Harney, Spiritual Leader of the Western Shoshone. Corbin had been a leading voice for nuclear disarmament. He gave us powerful messages that we must do all we can to protect the earth, especially the water. He will be missed, but we can commit to continuing his vision. To that end, this E-news contains several action items regarding disarmament. We hope you will get involved.

Plan Now for Hiroshima/Nagasaki Days, August 6-9, 2007.

WILPF branches across the country will gather with others in their communities to commemorate the 62nd anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This is a time to re-commit to say: "Never Again." For more information go to: http://disarm.wilpf.org/MayJune07/Hiroshima07.htm Please let us know in the national office of your event.

Keep Space for Peace Week

This Fall, WILPF once again is the Co-Sponsor of Keep Space for Peace Week. October 4-13, 2007. During the Social Forum, WILPF co-sponsored a workshop on the Weaponization of Space, which lays out a maniacal plan for the US to dominate earth through space based weapons. We must act to stop this madness. For more information go to:http://disarm.wilpf.org/MayJune07/KS4Presources.htm

October 27th Actions Against the War

In our continuing efforts to end the War, WILPF encourages everyone to attend an event in your area on October 27,2007. At the United for Peace and Justice gathering in June, it was agreed that activists around the country would plan actions on October 27th regionally. In the Mid-Atlantic region, where the WILPF national office is, we are planning an event for Dover Airforce Base. Go to the UFPJ website to find out more and what will be happening in your area:http://www.unitedforpeace.org/article.php?id=3694

Join Israeli WILPF Against the Occupation

Finally, we want to share with you a statement from WILPF's Israeli Section on recent events in Gaza. One of our strengths as an organization is that we truly are international. So we want to lift up the voices of our sisters in Israel and we join them in demanding an end to the Occupation and support for International Law.
