Jane Addams Children's Book Awards and Peace Education Toolkit
Each year since 1953, a committee of WILPF members has selected books published the preceding year to receive the Jane Addams Children's Book Awards. In addition to meeting standards for excellence, the children's books chosen are those that most effectively promote the cause of peace, social justice, world community, and the equality of the sexes and all races.
The award winners are announced on April 28, the anniversary of the founding of WILPF. An awards presentation ceremony, open to all, is held each year on the third Friday of October.
Many WILPF branches order sets of the award books for use in their communities. Promoting the awards can be a successful method of promoting WILPF - attracting new members, raising WILPF’s visibility, educating the community about WILPF’s mission and activities, and strengthening ties to sister organizations in the community.
A tool kit, Building WILPF with the Jane Addams Children’s Book Awards containing promotion ideas and tools is available online . After the award ceremony in October, WILPF branches can order discounted sets of the books to donate to schools, libraries, and other non-profit community organizations.
