August 2007 Branch Mailing
The good we secure for ourselves is precarious and uncertain until it is secured for all of us and incorporated into our common life.
Hello to WILPF Branch Contacts! August 2007
It has been an incredible summer! Thanks to all the members, branches and supporters who participated in the wide range of activities WILPF National sponsored, all while keeping busy with the amazing work happening at a branch level. Summers are usually a bit of a down time for organizing work, but not this year! It was busy from start to finish.
We kicked off with the June 10 March in Washington DC to End the Israeli Occupation, commemorating the 40th anniversary of the 1967 occupation of the West Bank, Gaza and the Golan Heights. WILPF had an impressive showing, and played a major role in mobilizing our members for the demonstration.
We sent staff and members to the major anti-war coalition, United for Peace and Justice’s General Assembly, where we joined over 200 people in developing a strategy to END THIS WAR NOW! We are excited to be part of this movement as it evolves in the face of seemingly untenable carnage and chaos in Iraq. The peace movement is truly at a crossroads, and it is up to us to mobilize until we bring our troops home.
Then to the US Social Forum, a historic gathering in Atlanta, where we had an opportunity to connect with other organizations, while highlighting multiple aspects of our cross-issue work.
And finally, we rounded out the summer with our triennial International Congress in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, where we made key decisions regarding International WILPF’s future, and experienced what truly is our international organization.
Make sure to check out our blog at www.wilpf.org/blog for further details and reporting of this summer’s activities.
As fall sets in, WILPF is on the move again, gearing up for Keep Space for Peace Week, Blue October [a month of action commemorating the inclusion of water rights in the constitution of Uruguay], and the October 27 regional actions against the war endorsed by the member groups of United for Peace and Justice. We are also excited about the new Bite the Bullet Network, fighting war profiteers, a network which WILPF’s DISARM team helped to found.
This is the final year of the campaign cycle, and the WCUSP and Water teams are planning for the action-oriented year of their campaign. Now that you have been sufficiently educated on the issues, it is time to take some serious action! As plans are still developing, don’t forget to order your water and WCUSP study guides, water bottles, t-shirts, and all the other great resources we’ve developed for you and your branch. If you need help navigating the wealth of resources we have to offer, please let me know and I will assist in any way that I can.
