Close the School of the Americas During April Days of Action

School of the Americas Watch (SOAW) is mobilizing for a gathering in Washington, DC from April 4-11, 2011 to take their demands to the White House, the halls of Congress, and other sources of military and foreign policy decisions.

Many WILPF women have been in the annual demonstrations at Fort Benning, Georgia, where the SOA (now called the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security and Cooperation) is located.  A few of us have even “crossed the line”, been arrested and served three months in prison. This imprisonment is a deliberate act of solidarity with the oppressed people and martyrs of the Americas, who suffer as a result of the repressive techniques taught to “students” at the SOA.

Over its 59 years, the SOA has trained over 60,000 Latin American soldiers in counterinsurgency techniques, sniper training, commando and psychological warfare, military intelligence and interrogation tactics. Graduates have consistently used their skills to wage a war against their own people.  Hundreds of thousands of Latin Americans have been tortured, raped, assassinated, “disappeared,” massacred, and forced to flee by those trained at the "School of Assassins".

WILPF has signed on as an Organizational Endorser to the April Days of Action in Washington DC (April 4-11). This convergence event will include a fast, street theater, direct action, and the Anti-Militarization conference with workshops, speakers, musicians and cultural events. Go to for more information.

We are planning a women’s presence in the March to the White House and Direct Action, called  “Let Justice Bloom”, on Sunday, April 10.  If you are joining this action, in solidarity with the Mothers of the Disappeared, and would like to connect with a WILPF contingent, contact Robin Lloyd at, or (c) 802-355-3256.
