Disarm and End the Wars!

A Call to Stop the Machine!

Leading up to the October 6 call to Stop the Machine in Freedom Plaza in Washington D.C., the WILPF Disarm and End Wars Issues Committees invites you to take action. Below, you will find more information on how to get involved, along with a list of resources for Keep Space for Peace week, October 1–8. You will also find information on writing your Congressional Representative in support of H.R. 780. This critical bill was introduced to Congress to "provide that funds for operations of the Armed Forces in Afghanistan shall be obligated and expended only for purposes of providing for the safe and orderly withdrawal from Afghanistan of all members of the Armed Forces and Department of Defense contractor personnel who are in Afghanistan."

End Endless War in Afghanistan!

from the End Wars Issue Committee

WILPF is a co-sponsor of the October 6 call to Stop the Machine and end ten years of war in Afghanistan. Hundreds—or thousands—of folks are expected to gather in Freedom Plaza in Washington D.C. and many plan to camp out there until the war ends and our troops come home. The call will be to end these endless wars and focus on building the better world we know is possible instead of dominion and rule by force.

WILPFers who are going for the October 6 gathering should contact Marge Van Cleef, co-chair of the WILPF End Wars Issue Committee. Also send your questions to Marge at mvc@igc.org. She is collecting names and contact information and will let you know when and where WILPFers can gather on October 6 to form our affinity group.

Those who can’t come to Washington for October 6 and the weeks beyond can still participate actively in the campaign to end the Afghan war and occupation. Send an e-letter to your own Congress person asking her/him to co-sponsor Barbara Lee’sH.R.780—Responsible End to the War in Afghanistan Act. If he/she is already one of the 63 co-sponsors, thank him/her. Urge active promotion of the bill among others in the House.

The WILPF DISARM! team suggests that WILPFers at home or in D.C., also use the resources provided for Keep Space for Peace Week (October 1 to 8) to point out the necessity of ending the Afghan war. This year the KS4P emphasis will be on unmanned killer drones. Read the lead article in the Global Network Space Alert for more information and action resources from WILPF on use of drones in Afghanistan and now in Pakistan and Libya as well.
